The brain, more especially the parts that control sleep-wake cycles, is the main organ affected by narcolepsy. It is associated with malfunction in the hypothalamus, where hypocretin (orexin)-producing neurons are either missing or diminished. Excessive daytime drowsiness, abrupt sleep episodes, and even cataplexy are caused by this imbalance, which throws off regular sleep cycles. The illness affects day-to-day functioning, although it does not directly harm other organs. The goal of management is to control symptoms with medication and lifestyle changes. Prescription medications such as Modvigil 200 may be used to increase alertness.
