    Hey everyone,
I hope someone here can help me out because I am honestly feeling a little lost right now. I recently decided to pursue the SolarWinds Observability Self-Hosted Fundamentals exam and I am not sure where to begin. I have been working in IT for about a year now and I have basic networking knowledge but I have never used the SolarWinds platform in a professional environment before.
I came across this certification while researching monitoring tools and it seemed like a great way to validate my skills and boost my resume. But now that I have actually looked at the syllabus I am feeling a bit overwhelmed. There are so many topics covered and I do not know which ones to prioritize first.
Here are the questions I am struggling with right now:
The first thing I cannot wrap my head around is the difference between agent based monitoring and agentless monitoring in SolarWinds Observability. I understand the basic concept but I am not sure how deep the exam goes into comparing the two approaches and when each one should be used in a real environment. Can someone break this down in simple terms?
The second thing that is confusing me is how polling engines work and how they relate to scalability. I know polling is a core concept in the Orion platform but I am not sure how many polling engines a typical setup uses and what happens when one fails. Is this something the exam tests heavily or is it more of an advanced topic?
Also how long did it realistically take you to prepare for this exam? I am hoping to sit for it within the next four to six weeks and I want to know if that is a reasonable timeline for someone at my level.
I have also heard that hands-on practice is really important for this exam. I was browsing Study4Exam recently and came across the SolarWinds Observability-Self-Hosted-Fundamentals Questions PDF which looks like a solid resource for practicing exam style questions. Has anyone used this platform for their preparation? I would love to know if the questions are close to what actually appears on the exam and whether combining it with hands-on platform practice gives you a real advantage on exam day.
Lastly, I would love to know which topics gave you the most trouble during your preparation. I have heard that alert configurations and dashboard customization can be tricky and I want to make sure I give those areas enough attention.
Any advice study tips or resource recommendations would mean a lot right now. I am very motivated to pass this exam on my first attempt and I just need a little push in the right direction.
