Vintage clothes vs regular thrift – what's the difference?

Genuine question here – what makes vintage clothes different from regular secondhand stuff?
I see people paying more for vintage clothes, but I'm not sure I understand the distinction. Is it just the age of the item, or is there more to it?
Trying to educate myself before I start shopping for vintage clothes online. Don't want to overpay for something that's just "old" vs. actually valuable.
